Proposed Charter School

The proposed charter school is the long-term anchor of ILA’s vision: a school designed to close opportunity gaps through ILA Design Studios, competency-based learning, neurodivergent-affirming design, and leadership pathways.

School Vision

Innovative Leadership Academy is designed to be a transformational public charter school where students experience learning that is hands-on, rigorous, relevant, and affirming. Our vision is to create a school where students are not only academically prepared, but also equipped to lead, create, solve problems, and thrive in high school, college, career, and life.

EDUCATIONAL DESIGN

The ILA school model is built around four key design elements:

  • ILA Design Studios
Hands-on, project-based learning experiences that connect academics to real-world thinking, creativity, and problem-solving.

  • Competency-Based Learning
Students progress through mastery, with personalized support, flexible pathways, and clear learning goals.

  • Neurodivergent-Affirming Design
Learning environments are built to support diverse learners through flexible structures, sensory-friendly practices, and responsive instruction.

  • Leadership Pathways
Students build confidence, voice, and purpose through entrepreneurship, collaboration, service, and community-connected learning.

WHY IT MATTERS

Too many students are not fully served by traditional school models. Families deserve access to a school that is innovative, engaging, supportive, and designed with the whole child in mind.

ILA’s proposed charter school matters because it will:

  • expand access to high-quality educational opportunities

  • close opportunity and academic gaps

  • create more affirming learning environments

  • prepare students for real-world success

  • respond to the needs and hopes of Houston families and communities

TIMELINE TOWARD AUTHORIZATION

Innovative Leadership Academy is currently moving through the charter authorization process.

Next steps include:

  • Capacity Interview – a formal opportunity to present the strength of ILA’s school model, leadership, governance, and readiness

  • State Board Hearing – a public presentation and review before the State Board

  • Final Approval – anticipated by July 2026

Throughout this process, ILA is continuing to strengthen its academic model, community partnerships, operational planning, and family engagement efforts to ensure the school is prepared for a strong launch.
